Whirlow’s 480 Scheme

“Every night before I went to bed, we had hot chocolate and a story; at home I just go to bed by myself” …

What does childhood mean to you? Simple things we take for granted; warmth, a full stomach & feeling safe?

For some of Sheffield’s young children, childhood means something very different. Reality can often mean; neglect, poverty, fear or even hunger.

Happy memories & positive experiences help us grow into confident, positive adults

We work with schools in the most deprived areas of Sheffield, providing a fun and nurturing environment where children can thrive. Our 480 scheme supports our city’s most needy & vulnerable children, allowing them to stay on the farm & gain respite from their home circumstances

480Whirlow delivers activities that kids just love! The therapeutic benefits of being outdoors & working with animals, sets the scene for building strong relationships with teachers & peers as they all live together in our farmhouse. Each £480 donation supports one school visit. We have a waiting list of local schools desperate to visit the farm but are unable to do so without 480 support

Choose Whirlow Hall Farm Trust

pony-grooming WebWhirlow Hall Farm is an Educational Trust which was set up in 1979 by Alan Aikin. Alan Aikin grew up in the inner city and was sent to a farm as an evacuee during the Second World War. He was so profoundly affected by his experience of farming and the countryside that years later he decided to set up a centre for all inner-city children to come and experience the wonders of the countryside and develop their understanding of where their food comes from.

Boy with Chicken WebA day at Whirlow Hall Farm provides children with a hands-on experience to further their understanding of a real working farm and the environment. For many of our young visitors this is the first time that they will have visited the countryside. Children have time to develop bonds and teamwork within a group, improving self-esteem and confidence. They may never have seen a farm animal close to before. By holding a newly-hatched chick, bottle feeding a new-born lamb or simply seeing a pig with her piglets for the first time, they are having an unforgettable experience and at the same time learning about where our food comes from.

“That was really humbling. Can we sponsor them to visit again next year?” - Dominic Staniforth of Barber Harrison and Platt after meeting the children whose visit they had sponsored through the 480 Club.

We are delighted that Sheffield based property developer Primesite UK Ltd, have signed up to our 480 scheme in November.  Primesite have undertaken many high profile commercial developments within the city with Broadfields Business Park being one of their largest and most recognised.

Scott Hinchliffe of Primesite said, ‘We are delighted to donate to Whirlow Farm and this excellent cause that helps the children learn from and enjoy the working farm environment the farm provides’ Thanks  to their generous donation, Rowan School will be visiting the farm in March 2017. Rowan School is a small, special school for primary aged children who have complex speech, language and communication difficulties.

“For the children in my class a visit to Whirlow isn’t a nice to have, it’s a must have” – teacher
