Patron Sir Michael Palin visits Farm to celebrate 40th anniversary of the Trust
Sir Michael Palin visits Whirlow Hall Farm as part of 40th anniversary celebrations
The sun shone on today as Ben Davies, Chief Executive, and John Gray, Head of Education greeted Whirlow’s long standing patron Sir Michael Palin and took him on a tour of the Learning and Training Centre, hen house, animal handling barn and farm shop.
On his tour, Sir Michael met staff and volunteers to talk about their involvement and support of the charity. He also met some of the children and young people who attend our alternative provision programmes which directly help the primary and secondary school children in the Sheffield City Region at risk of permanent or fixed term exclusion.
Sir Michael engaged in several conversations with the young people, laughing and smiling throughout his visit whilst hearing personal stories and understanding more about the benefits that Whirlow are providing.
Shortly after his tour, Sir Michael was escorted to 2 AA Rosette Michelin listed restaurant Rafters in Sheffield for an intimate lunch with 36 guests from the local business community. Sir Michael and the guests enjoyed a bespoke 7-course taster menu using Whirlow produce as each table had an exclusive opportunity to enjoy one course with Sir Michael on their table.
Chief Executive, Ben Davies commented, “Sir Michael’s visit has been an uplifting and exciting event for us at Whirlow, not least because the whole event has helped us raise funds for the work we do with the young people in our area. It’s almost 10 years since he last came to see us and we were delighted to show him the changes and developments both on the Farm and with the work we do.
This year marks a very special year for us with our 40th anniversary and we hope to see him at the Farm again soon.”
For all Palin’s fans, you haven’t missed out completely as Sir Michael will also be live on stage at Chesterfield Theatres with his tour Erebus, Python and Other Stories on 20th June at 7.30pm. For tickets visit here
