Whirlow LIFE Young Adults Residential
19.2.2025
Last week, our young adults got to experience a residential stay at The Barn.
The students who attend the Whirlow LIFE programme for those over 18, struggle with a range of complex additional needs; a night in The Barn supports their well-being while giving their caregivers the chance to recharge.
When they arrived, they set up their beds, taking pride in making their space comfortable for the night ahead. Working together, they prepared a delicious evening meal, each taking on different roles in the kitchen—stirring, chopping, and setting the table. The sense of accomplishment was clear as they sat down together to enjoy their home-cooked meal.
After tidying up, some students chose to immerse themselves in arts and crafts, creating colourful masterpieces to take home as souvenirs. Others relaxed with snacks, sharing stories and games.
Sticking to routine is important for many of the youngsters we work with, so everyone went to bed at their usual bedtimes, ensuring a restful night’s sleep. In the morning, they helped to make breakfast, setting themselves up for the day ahead. They then either walked back to the Farm or were collected from The Barn.
For our students, respite offers so much more than a night away. It’s an opportunity to socialise, try new things, and take steps towards independent living in a familiar setting. It boosts mental health, builds confidence, and strengthens valuable life skills.
For their caregivers, respite provides essential short-term relief and supports their physical and mental health. It allows them to rest, recharge, and manage other responsibilities while knowing their loved ones are in a safe and supportive environment.
A residential stay provides experiences that enrich lives—both for our young adults, and their families. Every stay is a step towards greater independence, and we can’t wait to welcome our next group for another unforgettable visit!
