Whirlow Receives £10,000 Lottery Funding
We are thrilled to have been awarded £10,000 of funding from the Coronavirus Community Support Fund, distributed by the National Lottery Community Fund.
The funding will support the work of our Whirlow LIFE (Learning In a Farming Environment) programmes for children who are struggling in school and young people with additional learning needs.
The Coronavirus pandemic has had a significant impact on our fundraising as we have not been able to run many of our activities as we usually would. Funding like this is vital to continuing our work and ensuring the future of Whirlow.
A mum of one of Whirlow’s beneficiaries told us how her son, Thomas, benefits from the Whirlow LIFE programme;
“Thomas loves being at Whirlow. He has learned and is learning so much with all aspects of farm life, as well as learning about horticulture and not forgetting the nature walks, arts & crafts and baking. During lockdown Whirlow did a fantastic job keeping in contact with both students and parents/carers through fun videos on YouTube about life on the farm during lockdown, quizzes, fun facts and activities. Also Sarah M & Sarah H did some socially distanced home visits. The fun filled activity packs they put together were very well received. As a parent/carer knowing that support was and is only an email or phone call away, is invaluable. Both myself and Thomas couldn't wish for a better support team.
Since being able to be back at Whirlow after lockdown Thomas is a lot more relaxed at home, as well as his autism and Oral Dyspraxia. Thomas has PICA which means if his stress levels are raised, he needs a strong stimulus to bring them back down, which means he will consume substances that will harm him, eg Albus oil, hand sanitizer etc. Now he's back at Whirlow his stress levels can now be managed with pressure massage. Whirlow farm really enriches Thomas’s life.”
Ben Davies, Whirlow’s Chief Executive said “This funding has come at the perfect time as we prepare for children to return to Whirlow after the summer holidays. We can’t wait to have them back and this support from the National Lottery Community Fund will help us make the changes necessitated by Covid restrictions. We are incredibly grateful.”
Thank you to the Government for making this possible.
